This report concerns one specimen of fossil wood from the Holy Cross quadrangle, Alaska, your locality number 60AHr19.

The specimen is wood of spruce, Picea. This extant genus occurs in both Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks; consequently, they cannot be differentiated by this fossil form.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
Pieces of fossil wood showing well-preserved growth rings and cell structure were found in and obtained from a thick section of siliceous tuffs and breccias of unknown age. I hope that study of the specimen will indicate whether the volcanic rocks are of Mesozoic or Tertiary age.

60AHr19 , Holy Cross , Location of collection determined on Holy Cross 1:250,000 map, 1951 Edition. Coords: 14.8, 12.5, Long. 160 deg. 9', Lat. 62 deg. 44'. On west bank of Yukon River, about 3 miles upstream from the mouth of Anvik River; first bedrock exposure above Anvik River. Fragments of fossil wood occur in a thick section of light-colored, siliceous tuffs and breccias.
