This report deals with one (1) sample collected from alluvial ? or lacustrine ? sand 10 feet below the top of a 60 foot river bluff on Judy Creek. Age of deposit taken 1 foot below sample found to be 10,080 plus or minus 145 (I-11,527). The deposit is part of the Gubik Formation and is located at 69 deg. 42.05 min. N. Latitude, 152 deg. 48.3 min. W. Longitude, T4N, R4W, Sec. 14, Umiat map sheet, C-5 map grid. Paleonenvironment
This early? Holocene ostracode assemblage is composed of largely cold climate species. Interestingly, C. rectangulata who is presumed to indicate extreme cold is rare. Perhaps this implies cold but not frigid conditions existed. I suspect, but lack the data to show, that this sort of assemblage may typify this region today.
This assemblage of ostracodes and charophytes suggest that this was a pond environment, i.e. the entire body of water would be shallow enough to be classified as littoral. The presence of C. ampla suggests that subaquatic vegetation existed. The ostracodes suggest that the water was fresh, probably with a salinity below 0.5 ppt. The water chemistry was dominated by calcium bicarbonate. The water may have been meso or eutrophic.
