Report on Referred Fossils
Edit Reference Add/Edit Sample Sample List Show Map

Stratigraphic range: Permian
Kinds of fossils: Invertebrates
Quadrangle or area: Russian Mission, Goodnews Bay, Kuskokwim
Shipment No.: AF-50-34
Referred by: Hoare, Joseph M.
Report prepared by: Williams, James Steele
Date: 02/20/1951

Seven collections transmitted in the above shipment were examined. One, 50AHr291-A, was thought to be Mesozoic and transferred to J.B. Reeside, Jr. for report. Another, 50AHr356-A, was thought to be Devonian or older and transferred to Josiah Bridge. Preliminary examinations of the other collections show that collections 50AHr378-A, 50AHr392, and 50AHr394-C are Permian in age and that collection 50AHr25 is probably Permian. Collection 50AHr17 is not diagnostic beyong being Paleozoic.

User Note module to be added
50AHr17 , Russian Mission , Near base of a prominent rock bluff, north side of Kuskokwim River, about 2 1/2 miles downstream of Aniak, Alaska. This is the first point below Aniak where the main river channel cuts bedrocks. The fossil horizon is a 6-8-foot bed of crystalline limestone containing fragments of volcanic rocks which is interbedded with argillitc and tuffaceous rocks. (all above information from transmittal form of Hoare)
crinoid columnals
fragments of other fossils
50AHr25 , Russian Mission , Near the base of a low (40-50 foot) rock bluff, north side of Kuskokwim River, about 10-12 river miles below Aniak, Alaska. The fossil horizon is accessible only during low water. The fossil horizon is 20 to 30 feet of hard, crystalline limestone exposed over a strike distance of about 150 feet. The east end is covered by alluvium; the west end is terminated by a fault. The limestone is interbedded with altered volcanic rocks. The limestone is the same age as the volcanic rocks for it grades into them on both upper and lower contacts. (all above information from transmittal form of Hoare)
crinoid columnals
impressions and fragmentary remains of parts of several brachiopods (mostly spiriferoids)
Spiriferella arctica (Houghton)
Stenopora
Rhombotrypella
Timanodictya
Fenestella
50AHr378-A , Goodnews Bay , 28 1/4 miles S 51 1/2 deg. W of outlet of Lake Kagati. 14 miles N 25 deg. W of outlet of Goodnews Lake. 1 1/2 miles N of a small cirque lake. On a small, low limestone ridge which trends NE and lies near the north side of the lowland between (and near the heads of) the two major forks of Nukluk Creek. Fossils came from the upper one-third of a 50-70-foot bed of crystalline limestone. Near the bottom the limestone weathers to a buff and greenish and is probably tuffaceous. The middle portion is quite massive. Near the top, the limestone is thin-bedded and probably tuffaceous. Immediately underlying the limestone is green chert and tuffs. Overlying the limestone is amygdaloidal lava. (all above information from transmittal form of Hoare)
Spiriferella arctica (Houghton)
few indeterminate fragments of other brachiopods
crinoid columnals
stenoporoid form
50AHr392 , Goodnews Bay , 24 1/2 miles S 66 deg. W of outlet of Lake Kagati. 18 1/2 miles N 14 1/2 miles W of outlet of Goodnews Lake. 4 miles S 3 1/2 deg. W of mouth of Klak Creek. On the crest of and about 1 mile from the northeast end of the high, isolated ridge which lies south of Kanektok River between Nukluk Creek and first stream west of Klak Creek. Fossils came from a highly fossiliferous bed of tuffaceous limestone 5-10 feet thick. Overlying the fossil horizon is at least 400 feet of massive and thin-bedded crystalline limestone which is tuffaceous in places throughout its thickness and, in general, becomes increasingly tuffaceous toward the base. The fossil horizon grades downward into chert and fine-grained volcanic rocks several hundred feet thick. (all above information from transmittal form of Hoare)
Spiriferella arctica (Houghton)
Productus or Marginifera aff. M. aagardi (Toula)
Camerophoria (Stenoscisma of recent usage)
Spirifer
probably Spiriferina (Punctospirifer of recent authors)
fragments representing other genera of brachiopods
50AHr394-C , Goodnews Bay , 26 1/2 miles S 62 1/2 deg. W of outlet of Kagati Lake. 17 1/4 miles N 20 1/2 deg. W of outlet of Goodnews Lake. 5 3/4 miles S 17 deg. W of mouth of Klak Creek. On the crest of and about 6 1/4 miles from the northeast end of the high, isolated ridge which lies south of Kanektok River between Nukluk Creek and the first stream west of Klak Creek. Fossils came from a small exposure of crystalline limestone which apparently overlies the same chert and fine-grained volcanic rocks as mentioned above, but at this point the thick overyling limestone has been removed by erosion. (all above information from transmittal form of Hoare)
lophophyllid types
crinoid columnals
Spiriferella arctica (Houghton)
large Spirifer, probably of the S. condor-type
productid or Marginifera, referred to M. septentrionalis (Tschernyschew)
productoid form
spiriferoid form
