Kinds of fossils: Brachiopods
Quadrangle or area: Port Alexander and Petersburg quads., Alaska
Shipment No.: A-80-17
Referred by: Brew, David A.
Report prepared by: Dutro, J. Thomas, Jr.
Date: 03/09/1983

This report covers the 9 collections in this shipment containing Carboniferous and Permian megafossils. Six of these collections are Early Permian, one is Pennsylvanian and two are possibly Carboniferous. The most significant collection is 80SK500B (USGS 27714-PC) from Muffler's crinoidal limestone (Cl). This collection has many more kinds of fossils than similar old collections and is definitely of Pennsylvanian age. Of the Muffler collections from the same unit, I can now say that 63AMp590 is possibly so, although it has very few fossils in it. Consequently, this unit is correlative to the Klawak or Ladrones Limestones of Prince of Wales Island, and possibly also with the chert and limestone member and part of the silty limestone member of the Saginaw Bay Formation. Muffler's collection 63AMp343 is also Pennsylvanian. As other collections from the silty limestone member contain probable early Permian fusulinids, that member is Pennsylvanian and early Permian in age. Fusulinids from the Halleck Formation are late Wolfcampian, according to R.C.Douglass (see his report dated 12/29/80). The Permian Pybus Formation collections in this shipment contain brachiopods faunas that are Leonardian. Consequently, all the current evidence indicates that the Halleck and Pybus Formations are Lower Permian.
