Report on Referred Fossils
Edit Reference Add/Edit Sample Sample List Show Map

Stratigraphic range: Middle Devonian? to Late Mississippian
Kinds of fossils: Invertebrates
Quadrangle or area: Charley River and Eagle quads.
Shipment No.: A-61-19
Referred by: Brabb, Earl E.
Report prepared by: Gordon, Mackenzie, Jr. , Yochelson, Ellis L.
Date: 07/11/1963

This report is based on eight small collections from the Calico Bluff Formation and supplements earlier USGS collections made the Eagle-Circle district. Although most of the fossils are poorly preserved it is possible to recognize the Goniatites granosus zone represented by the collections 61ABa483, 1891-C, and 2001-B. Whether the large flattened goniatite that resembles Pronorites belongs with Cravenoceras in the lower Eumorphoceras zone cannot be determined from the material at hand. The other collections are too meager and fragmental to be of much use, but 61ABa1361 looks like the same fauna of possible Devonian age represented by 60ABa122 in shipment A-60-21.

Collections listed below that have been assigned permanent USGS locality number from the Upper Paleozoic register (-PC) will be retained. Others will be discarded after October 1 if no word to the contrary is received before then.

Ellis Yochelson has checked the identifications of the gastropods and is therefore responsible for them.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
Some of the specimens from the Calico Bluff formation seem to be different from those illustrated by Gordon (USGS PP 283); perhaps they will be helpful in refining the age assignment of this imporotant formation. The cephalopods of 61ABa1361 are similar to those submitted in 1960 (P&S shipment A-60-21; no report received as of Oct. 12, 1961) from a new unit in the Chief Mountain-Tatonduk River area. The age of this new unit has not yet been satisfactorily determined, but I think that the upper part is Middle and/or Late Devonian; the middle part is Silurian; the lower part is Ordovician.
