Stratigraphic range: Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous
Kinds of fossils: Pelecypods
Quadrangle or area: Nabesna A-2, A-3, B-4 and C-5
Shipment No.: A-68-12
Referred by: Richter, Donald H.
Report prepared by: Imlay, Ralph W.
Date: 10/21/1968

The upper Mesozoic fossils from the Nabesna district in the eastern Alaska Range are listed below from top to bottom according to the stratigraphic scheme shown on page 3 of the transmittal statement.

These collections were examined by me instead of David Jones because they happened to be sent here directly from Alaska, but will all be sent to Dave at Menlo Park for further examination. The collections there already include the Lower Cretaceous Buchias collected by Moffit and others (see Imlay and Reeside, 1954, GSA Bull. v. 65, p. 235). The Jurassic Buchia collections from the eastern Alaska Range (Imlay, 1952, GSA Bull. v. 63, p. 981) are here in Washington, but will also be sent to Menlo Park, because some are from your map area and some may actually be of Cretaceous age.

It was a pleasure to examine these collections.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
A thick unit of flysch-type argillite, argillite-graywacke and minor conglomerate overlies the Triassic rocks in the Nabesna quadrangle. Although both Jurassic and Cretaceous fossils have been recognized from these rocks (Moffit, Bull. 989-D) they have been from widely scattered localities precluding any reliable attempt to subdivide the ujnit. This year in the Chisana district, we are very fortunate to collect 8 fossil suites acros an apparent continuous section more than 5000 feet thick and including a major lithologic contact. An additional 5 other suites were collected from the unit elsewhere in the area.

Age assignment and possible definition of a Jura-Cretaceous boundary, if such a boundary exists, is desired.
