SUMMARY

This report is a restudy of the Upper Devonian collections made by Patton in1953 and P. S. Smith and J. B. Mertie, Jr. in 1924. All of the collections are apparently from near the base of the Kanayut Conglomerate, either in the basal sandy layers or in the sandy upper part of the Hunt Fork Formation immediately below.

All collections contain similar fossil assemblages, the critical forms for dating being Cyrtospirifer, Cyrtiopsis and Sinotectirostrum. These are all characteristic of the Famennian, particularly the lower half of the stage.

Commonly there is a great amount of molluscan material, suggesting in this instance a rather shallow water environment. The shells are frequently in broken coquinoid masses, implying rather strong wave or current action and considerable sorting.

Several of the collections, especially 1967, 1968, and 1969-SD, contain angular fragments of black siltstone or shale. A few angular dark chert fragments were also identified. Most of these collections also contain scattered echinoderm debris. The rocks can be classified as calcareous quartzitic grits or sandstones.
