Portions or all of collections 58ALy36, 204, 221, 136b, 290, 330, and 494 are being retained for the P&S reference collections. These collections will be deposited at the Menlo Park laboratory and will be assigned USGS locality number in Menlo Park. As requested, the remainder of the material that was not destroyed in preparation is being returned.

The faunal lists of the material for the various collections covered by this report are as follows:

Report by: Norman J. Silberling
Referred by: R. A. Loney
Age: Mesozoic (suggestive of early Mesozoic)
Comment:Collection 58ALy164 contains a fragment suggestive of a scleractinian coral and large, thick oyster-like shell fragments with coarse prismatic shell structure, all of which suggests an early Mesozoic age; however, this collection has been turned over to Helen Duncan for thin sectioning and further study.

Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1960 (04/04)
Summary

This report is concerned with two collections (58ALy164 and 58ALy423) that were obtained from rocks considered to be of Triassic age in the field. N.J. Silberling's report February 25, 1959, indicated that these were to be turned over to Duncan along with three others (58ALy448, -448a, and -456), that contained fossils of "probable pre-Mesozoic age." After the collections in question were located this past winter, the three that you inquired about on July 15, 1956 [note by R.B. Blodgett: one would presume that 1959 was meant here, not 1956], were transferred to W.A. Oliver for study inasmuch as the fossils seemed to be early rather late Paleozoic types. Oliver's report of March 10, 1960, deals with these lots.

In the remaining collections, evidence that confirms the Triassic field assignment was found in 58ALy164. A Permian brachiopod-bryozoan fauna occurs in lot 58ALy423.

The hydrozoans, corals, and bryozoans were studied by Duncan. Dutro identified the brachiopods.

Report by: Helen Duncan , J. Thomas Dutro , Jr.
Referred by: R. A. Loney
Age: Triassic
Comment:In addition to the fragments of thick shell with coarse prismatic structure, which were commented on by Silberling, this collection contains indications of corals and a spongiomorphid hydrozoan. The corals are represented by two broken and worn fragments that do not exhibit enough structural features for generic identification. The hydrozoan is a recrystallized specimen of Stromatomorpha, probably S. californica Smith. The type specimen of this species came from the Upper Triassic of Gravina Island. The occurrence of this fossil helps confirm the Triassic field assignment.
