Description: |
Howard Pass C-4. Lat. 68o 32'53" N., Long. 158o 06'35" W. Brownish-gray, grayish-orange-weathering, fossiliferous lime wackestone to packstone containing bryozoans and corals. Forms matrix to abundant large colonial corals of Pragian-Eifelian age (see table 3 for megafossil data). Thin section is coralline pack/wackestone that has a dolomitic matrix. Collected from unnamed Devonian limestone unit (Dl), at about middle of approx. 4-m-thick fossiliferous interval underlying carbonate mudstone. (description from Dover et al., 2004, p. 32 (Table 1)); [Howard Pass C-4. 68°32'52", 158°06'40". Brownish-gray, grayish orange-weathering, fossiliferous lime wackestone to packstone containing bryozoans and corals. Forms matrix to abundant large colonial corals (Pragian-Eifelian), reported on by Bill Oliver, E and R: A-93-6. Collected from unnamed Devonian limestone unit (Dls) unit, at about middle of ~4 m-thick fossiliferous unit underlying carbonate mudstone. From same locality as above ("referring to 92AD43D"). (description from Harris E&R reports dated Jan. 25, 1995 (Shipment no. A-95-3a) and March 17, 1995 (shipment A-95-3)0. |

Analysis of all samples is given in the accompanying 16-page table. The range of biostratigraphically important samples is shown on the accompanying diagram. The heavy-mineral concentrates were analyzed by Nancy Stamm; the residues have been returned to Julie Dumoulin. Please note a few (~4 samples have heavy-mineral concentrates that include chalcopyrite and bornite). |

Comment: | Age: Early-Middle Devonian--Corals restrict age to Pragian-Eifelian (middle Early-early Middle Devonian) Biofacies: Panderodid biofacies; shallow-water shelf, relatively normal marine depositional environment. CAI = 1.5 9.2 kg of rock processed (260 g of +20 mesh and 37 g 20-200 mesh insoluble residue). Heavy-mineral concentrate: chiefly iron oxides, weather and fresh pyrite euhedra, dolomite rhombs, and ferruginous bioclasts. |

All conodont analyses and samples and residue weights are given in the attached tables. The age range of all samples is graphically shown on the accompanying diagram. Please give a copy of this report to Jim Dover and anyone else on the Howard Pass project that needs these data. I will do all the Carboniferous samples while in Florida. |
