Comment: | The single ammonoid cephalopod in this collection is PROTOCANITES cf. P. LYONI (Meek and Worthen), a common species in the Lower Mississippian of North America. The PROTOCANITES LYONI Zone of Gordon (1979) straddles the Kinderhookian-Osagean boundary. This occurrence in northwest Alaska is probably at about the same level as the beds with MUENSTEROCERAS, reported by Gordon in 1957 from the De Long Mountains. The two genera usually occur together in the upper part of the PROTOCANITES LYONI Zone in early Osagean strata. The shale from which the collection came is probably correlative with the upper part of the type Kayak Shale.
