Comment:Imlay and I have re-examined lots 48AHr50-A, 50-B, and 56. The abundant fossil in them, identified by Imlay as Inoceramus corpulentus McLearn, certainly does not look like that species. However, some of the species of Inoceramus may be surely distinguished from certain species of Aucella only by the hinge, and for some time we could not uncover any specimens with the hinge preserved. We finally did so, after considerable rock-grinding, and found it to be of the Aucella type. We would therefore change the identification of the specimens in the three lots from Inoceramus corpulentus McLearn to Aucella cf. A. crassicollis Keyserling, which requires an assignment to the Lower Cretaceous level.

We are glad you raised the questions of these lots, for there was nothing particular about them to suggest to us the discordance with other field lots, not was there anything to suggest that more intensive examination was needed.
