Comment: | This collection turned up while curating some old material that was stored away at the time of the move into new quarters here at the museum. Although the mapping has been published for this quadrangle, the information is of interest because the collection contains brachiopods and an unusual pelecypod. Unfortunately, all the brachiopod specimens are fragmental and cannot be identified to genus. However, both rhynchonelloid and terebratuloid kinds occur, representatives of the two major Mesozoic brachiopod groups. In addition, there are two isolated pectenoid clam fragments with camptonectid ornament. Although hinge and notch structures are not present, this could be Camptochlamys which occurs in the upper part of the Jurassic. The camptonectid group ranges from Triassic(?) through Cretaceous. The rock matrix of this collection is a black or dark gray quartzose grit with scattered pebbles of black chert. According to the Brabb and Churkin map of the quadrangle, this locality is in the Keenan Quartzite which is dated as early Cretaceous. |
