Sample No. 88A-1
Locality:
Field No. 88A-1
Description:
Locality consists of the basal 90 m of the lower member of the Ulangarat unit. Its geographic coordinates are: Lat. 69
o
00.35'N, Long. 143
o
21.65'W; and it is located in the SW1/4, NE1/4, SE1/4 of sec. 17, T5S, R37E, Demarcation Point A-4 quadrangle. At this locality, the basal 32 m consists of green-gray-weathering mudstone, which is overlain by black phyllite with sporadic fossiliferous calcareous siltstone and fine-grained sandstone interbeds. The specimens of
Bicarinatina
were recovered from throughout the mudstone interval. (description from Popov and others, 1994, p. 1215). (=locality 16 of Reiser and others, 1980, USGS Map I-1133).

Title:
First occurrence of the genus Bicarinatina (Brachiopoda, Inarticulata) from the Middle Devonian of North America (Alaska)
, 1994
Abstract--The lingulid brachiopod species
Bicarinatina kongakutensis
n. sp. is recorded here from the Middle Devonian (Eifelian) Ulangarat unit in Arctic Alaska. A restudy of the type species,
Bicarinatina bicarinata
(Kutorga) from the Middle Devonian (Eifelian) of Eastern Europe, suggests close affinities with the Ordovician genus
Pseudolingula
and gives god reason to assign
Bicarinatina
to the family Pseudolingulidae. There is no important points of difference in the morphologies of
Bicarinatina
and the Early Carboniferous lingulid genus
Liralingua
and, thus, both genera are here synonymized.
