Comment: | This is a preliminary report on the single sample from the coral reef in depositional contact with the Keku conglomerate above the Keku volcanic flows (80SK519A). In addition to the large, branching spongiomorphs and the scleractinian corals, there are a single fragment of a cidaroid echinoid and two brachiopod specimens. The first is a finely costate Spondylospira with affinities to S. alia (Hall and Whitfield) and the second is a poorly preserved spiriferacean that has fewer costae and may be a second spcies of Spondylospira. The assemblage is Upper Triassic, probably Karnian, as indicated by stratigraphic position (SEE Silberling's report in Muffler, 1967), but the non-coralline elements are not diagnostic. The corals and spongiomorphs will be examined in more detail by George Stanley and the echinoid by Porter Kier. POerhaps they will be able to pin-point the age more precisely. |
