Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1971 (05/12)
Report by: J. Thomas Dutro , Jr.
Referred by: H. N. Reiser
Age: Cambrian
Comment:This collection consists of a number of laminated algal stromatolites (oncolites) up to two inches in diameter. Several of these show characteristic structures that have been interpreted as of algal origin and pore space appear to be filled with bitumin ("dead oil") in many places. Structures of this kind are considered indicators of very shallow marine conditions, perhaps carbonate mud flats. Stromatolites are very common in the Cambro-Ordovician and Precambrian, although ranging into younger systems. This occurrence, in a sequence dated nearby as Early Cambrian, is certainly suggestive of Cambrian age.
