Stratigraphic range: Devonian
Kinds of fossils: Brachiopods and Molluscs
Quadrangle or area: Wiseman
Shipment No.: A-65-9
Referred by: Brosge, William P.
Report prepared by: Dutro, J. Thomas, Jr.
Date: 02/23/1966

This report covers brachiopods and molluscs from 6 collections including somewhat over one hundred specimens, most of them in collection 65ABe24. There is no question that these are either late Middle or Late Devonian age. However, precised dating again eludes us and some of the suggested correlations may cause stratigraphic difficulties. There is nothing that can be definitely be called Middle Devonian, the most probable collection being 65ABe7A. Two collections are likely early Late Devonian (65ABe21 and 65ABe24) and one appears to be even younger, possibly Famennian (65ABe7D). Where do we go from here?

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
Request for Examination of Fossils sheet of Aug. 27, 1965, states (from Brosge) states: "65ABe7a, 7D and 7E are from the same calcareous clastic unit as Mucrospirifer collections 51APa22, 51AMg13 and 51AMg14. 65ABe7E is approximately the same locality as 51AMg14. So far as we can tell this calcareous clastic unit is younger than the black limestone-siltstone unit in which the brachiopods of 65ABe7B, and 65ABe24 and the colrals of 65ABe21 (on separate Request) occur. Thus far we have identifications of Middle Devonian fossils in the calcareous clastic unit and of some lower Upper Devonian fossils in the underlying limestone-siltstone unit.
