The following identifications are on a series of stratigraphic collections from Yakataga Reef at Cape Yakataga (sec. 25, T. 21 S., R. 17 E., Bering Glacier 15' quad.). They are from a 1,500 ft measured section that spans the Yakataga Formation/Poul Creek Formation contact. All but one of the collections (M4235) are from a 700-foot stratigraphic interval in the lowermost part of the Yakataga Formation.

Comments: The small faunal assemblage from the upper part of the Poul Creek Formation has a few species in common with the "Blakeley Stage" of northwestern Washington. Not represented among the present collection, but common in older collections from the Poul Creek, is Liracassis [Echinophoria of author's] apta, an index species to the upper part of the "Blakeley Stage." This part of the "Blakeley" is generally considered to be of early Miocene age by molluscan specialists; foraminiferal specialists, however, generally place it in their late Oligocence.
Assemblages from the Yakataga Formation are every difficult to place in the molluscan sequence of the conterminous Pacific coast states. The appearance of Patinopecten at or near the base is suggestive of middle Miocene, or younger, age as this genus is not known to occur in pre-middle Miocene strata along the Pacific coast.
