Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1970 (01/02)
This report summarizes paleontologic studies on the first of two shipments of invertebrate fossils from the Malaspina and Yakataga Districts submitted fro examination and report by George Plafker. The remaining collections will be studied as soon as they are prepared, probably during the next 4 to 6 weeks. This report includes all of the collections from rocks mapped as undoubted Kulthieth Formation in addition to one collection each from the Poul Creek Formation? and the Yakataga Formation. Because of the generally poor quality of preservation of these collections most of the material is doubtfully identified.
Report by: Warren O. Addicott
Referred by: George Plafker
Age: Paleocene
Formation: Kulthieth Formation (Kulthieth Formation ?)
Comment:The single well-preserved external mold of a Turritella appears to be identical to a subspecies of T. merriami characteristic of the Paleocene "Meganos Stage" of northern California. This doubtfully identified Turritella provides the first indication of marine rocks of Paleocene age from Alaska. The northernmost occurrence of larger marine invertebrate assemlages of undoubted Paleocene age along the west coast of North America is in northern California near latitude 40o N. If at all possible more material should be obtained from this rock unit in order to better determine its age in terms of the Pacific Coast megafaunal sequence.
