Report on Referred Fossils

The following report covers the corals submitted with covered memo dated March 1. Three collections, 2, 15, and 36, contain aphrosalpingoideans and two, 14 and 54, contain brachiopods; these will be reported on by other paleontologists at a later date. Two of these collections contain corals but only one of them is reasonably well dated. The coral collections may all be Devonian but only a few are definitely so. The identifications and age determinations follow. |

Comment: | Both collections are Middle Devonian (Givetian) in age. However, there is some indication that collection 64 is slightly younger than 54. The molluscan assemblage together with the kinds of Atrypa and Schizophoria suggest that 65AHr54 is approximately equivalent to the Stringocephalus zone. The species of Atrypa and Spinatrypa, in addition to the Hypothyridina and Aulacella indicate a later Givetian age for 65 AHr64. It is quite possible that you collected through a straightforward sequence. More collections are needed, however, to demonstrate this conclusively. It could be that you just collected slightly different beds in the same limestone unit. A part of collection is silicified and is being etched to recover brachiopods and other small fossils. Any significant additional information, that might suppliment or emend the above statemens, will be reported later.
[Comment by R.B. Blodgett, 4/23/07: Subsequent detailed study of the entire fauna from this formation containg these two faunas indicates that the fauna is of Eifelian (early Middle Devonian) age.] |
