Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1954 (12/01)
Report by: Ralph W. Imlay
Referred by: Troy L. Pewe
Age: Santonian-Maastrichtian (late Santonian to Maastrichtian)
Formation: Unknown
Comment:The ammonite from near mile post 137.5 on the Glenn Highway is a Pachydiscus similar to P. catarinae (Anderson and Hanna) from Baja California. Grantz collected a similarly stout, unornamented pachydiscid at locality 54AGz184 on the north bank of Alfred Creek at its junction with Caribou Creek in the Talkeetna Mountains. At the time the specimen was collected, we considered its position to be in the upper part of the lower half of the shale member of the Matanuska formation, i.e. a little below the middle of the member. You might check with Grantz now that he has done more detailed work in the area. Similar large, stout, smooth pachydiscid ammonites are known from many parts of the world in beds of late Santonian to Maestrichtian age.
