Report on Referred Fossils
Edit Reference Add/Edit Sample Sample List Show Map

Stratigraphic range: Siluro-Devonian to Triassic(?)
Kinds of fossils: Mainly corals
Quadrangle or area: Sitka & Sumdum
Shipment No.: A-59-10
Referred by: Lathram, E. H.
Report prepared by: Duncan, Helen
Date: 07/07/1959

This report is concerned with collections listed on page 3 of your Request for Examination of Fossils. Corals are the dominant group. In the absence of W.A. Oliver, who is responsible for early Paleozoic coral studies, I have ventured a preliminary opinion on the age of three lots (59ALy54, 59APy200, and 59ABg40) that appear to be pre-Carboniferous. This report may be regarded for final the other two collections (59APy198 and 59ALy38).

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
Determination of general age of the material will aid in solution of structural and stratigraphic problems encountered during field mapping currently under way in S. Admiralty Island. At this time, only brief, perhaps informal, period classificiation of collections is desired. Material to be retained by P&S for routine complete report.

User Note module to be added
59ALy54 , Sumdum , No description given in E&R report. [Massive, dark gray limestone about 10 feet thick in grayish-black phyllitic slate section of thickness thickness. Largely coral-like forms. Important to know at least whether Mesozoic or Paleozoic. Locality is in creek flowing N20E into the south shore of Snug Cove, Gambier Bay, Admiralty Island. Mouth of creek is 1.6 miles S33W from Gem Pt. Locality is about 1 mile from creek mouth at an altitude of 500 ft. Sumdum B-6 coords: 0.55, 10.45 (description from transmittal sheet of E.H. Lathram, dated 6/30/59)]
dendroid tabulate corals
other corals
59APy200 , Sitka , No description given in E&R report [Dark gray crystalline limestone of unknown thickness. Contains coral-like forms, and peculariar rod-shaped forms (fusulinids?). State of preservation is poor, but it would be of great help to know whether the unit is of Paleozoic or Mesozoic. Limestone is in fault contact with volcanics of uncertain age, possibly Triassic. Sitka C-1 coords: 10.55, 4.05 (description from transmittal sheet of E.H. Lathram, dated 6/30/59)]
rodlike bodies suggestive of the dendroid stromatoporoid Amphipora
59ABg40 , Sitka , No description given in E&R report [Brown weathering thin-bedded to massive, dark gray, partly silicified limestone. Thickness unknown but probably exceeds 200 feet. Fossils are mostly corals or coral fragments, and possibly fragments of pelecypods or brachiopods, and bryozoans. Locally, zones up to 6 or more feet thick are composed nearly entirely of organic remains. Field stratigraphic assignment of unit is Paleozoic/Permo-Carboniferous or Silurian-Devonian. Sitka A-2 coords: 6.89, 1.84 (description from transmittal sheet of E.H. Lathram, dated 6/30/59)]
tryplasmatids
cystiphyllids
cyathophyllids
59APy198 , Sitka , Sitka quadrangle C-2, coordinates 1.90, 2.25. Gray-weathering limestone, much disturbed. Appears to lie (structurally) between volcanics of Triassic(?) age. Estimated thickness 1000 feet (description from E&R report) [Gray-weathering limestone, much disturbed. Crystalline, dark gray on fresh surface. Structurally complex. Appears to lie (structurally) between volcanics of Triassic (?) age. Estimated thickness 1000 plus feet. Poorly preserved corals sparsely distributed. Exact area has never been mapped before. Sitka C-2 coords: 1.90, 2.25 (description from transmittal sheet of E.H. Lathram, dated 6/30/59)]
recrystallized corals that either are Paleozoic Rugosa or post-Paleozoic scleractinians
59ALy38 (18491-PC) , Sitka , Cannery Formation; massive graywacke in stream 2.0 miles from mouth of stream flowing into west end of Snug Cove, Gambier Bay, Admiralty Island; lat 57 deg. 24' N., long 134 deg. 03' W. Collector: R.A. Loney, 1964. (from Rowett, 1975, USGS Prof. Paper 623-D, p. 72) [59ALy38f (mistakenly given as 59ALy58f in original E&R report of Duncan). Sitka quadrangle B-1, coordinates 10.5, 10.9. Two airline miles west of mouth of creek entering Snug Cove, Gambier Bay, Admiralty Island, from the southwest. Greenish gray, massive, very coarse, cherty, calcareous graywacke occurring in thick beds in dark gray argillite sequence of unknown age. Field assignment: Mesozoic(?). (description from Duncan E&R report); [Greenish gray, massive, very coarse, cherty, calcareous greywacke. Occurs as thick beds in a dark gray argillite sequence of unknown age (Mesozoic?). Locality 2 airline miles west from mouth of creek entering Snug Cove, Gambier Bay, Admiralty I. from the southwest. Sitka B-1 coords: 10.5, 10.9. (description from transmittal sheet of E.H. Lathram, dated 6/30/59)]
