Date: 05/29/1968

Collections from the two sections at Cape Dyer add considerably to our understanding of the Mississippian strata on the Lisburne Peninsula and supplement the conclusions based on Campbell's and my collections from the Cape Thompson area. Section 1, at stations T140 and T143, contains correlatives of the lower Alapah (especially lithologic zone 2, the dark, limestone member). This is the Lithostrotion aff. L. asiaticum Zone of Duncan. It appears that all the collections from the base of the sequence up through 20288-PC (61ATr143de-e) are assignable to this zone. Sando's comparison of this form with L. sinuosum (Kelly) from Alberta is especially interesting because it sheds some light on correlations with the Osage and Meramec of the central United States. In Alberta, MacQueen and Bamber (1967, Geol. Survey Canada, Paper 67-47) report that this species occurs in the upper Osage and lower Meramec equivalents. I suspect that the Osage-Meramec boundary falls within this zone in the western Brooks Range. A number of brachiopods associated with the corals appear to be late Osage forms and have been found elsewhere in upper Wachsmuth collections where no corals are present. Thus, our earlier suggestion that the Osage-Meramec boundary coincides, approximately, with the Wachsmuth-Alapah boundary may need revision, at least for the western Brooks Range. In this regard, Mamay's conclusion that the floras from Cape Dyer represent Floral Zone 2 (an Osage assemblage) fits in well with the evidence from the invertebrates.

Representatives of Sando's Faberophyllum Zone (middle Meramec) seem to be present in 20290-PC (61ATr143g-h) from the measured section and in 20279-PC (61ATr122) and 20276-PC (61ATr114). Faberophyllum? was identified by Duncan from collection 18982-PC at the base of Campbell's Ml4 unit.

The highest collection in Section 1 20294-PC (61ATr143o-p) contains a Michelinia that Sando compares with a 5th lithologic zone form in the central Brooks Range. This suggests a Meramec age for the beds below.

The two collections from Section 3 have coral assemblages in the same stratigraphic order as those in Section 1. I would suggest that this section represents repeating by faulting of the lower part of Section 1, rather than be a higher stratigraphic unit.

The occurrence of Caninia in three of the collections (20274-PC, 20278-PC and 20275-PC) are difficult to place in a measured section. They may not represent the same stratigraphic level, but Caninia was identified by Duncan in beds just above definite Meramec correlatives in the lower part of Campbell's Ml4 unit.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
61ATr000: Collection from Crowbill Pt. at Chariot site from rocks covered by water after breakup.
Possibly additional faunal data for uppermost part of Lisburne at site (refer to Russ Campbell)
61ATr110F-122F-scattered collections along Ipewik River from upper and lower stratigraphic units of Group for sample of faunal zones represented.
61ATr139F. Collection from near base of upper strat. unit at Cape Dyer for faunal check.
61ATr140-143. Collections from detailed strat. section to establish faunal reference column for lower stratigraphic unit, Cape Dyer. 140cF contains plant fossils as well as invertebrates from tongue of terriginous rocks; should be critical in faunally dating coaly section that underlies Lisburne Group.
