Stratigraphic range: Silurian or Devonian
Kinds of fossils: Corals
Quadrangle or area: Sitka C-1, Alaska
Shipment No.: A-60-9
Referred by: Lathram, E. H.
Report prepared by: Oliver, William A., Jr.
Date: 05/23/1960

Collections 58 AL105F and -110F include a number of branching and massive or palmate favositoid corals probably referable to the genus Thamnopora. Possibly represented also are Alveolites and stromatoporoids. The growth forms and morphologic structure of the ā€œThomnoporaā€ suggest a Silurian or Devonian age. Fine structures are not preserved and no more diagnostic forms are present.

The material in the two collections is not very similar to any of the collections that I reported on in A-59-11 or A-59-10, but the Silurian-Devonian age is better than Helen Duncan and I were able to do for collections 59APy198 to which you relate the present collections. Branching favositoid corals occur in most of the collections that you list but preservation varies so much from collection to collection that significant comparison is impossible.

The block that seemed to be full of shells is a flat pebble conglomerate with no identifiable fossils.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
These poor fossils occur in a massive outcropping of deformed limestone, believed correlative with rocks containing 58Ly448 and 58ALy456 shipment A58-11, reported on by Oliver 3/10/60, and 59ALy54, 59APy198, 59APy200 and 59ABg40, shipment A59-10 reported on by Oliver 8/18/59, and Duncan 7/7/59. These new localities are in the same limestone as 59APy198, and bracket it geographically. Stratigraphic position unknown. C. W. Merriam has looked at the specimens and feels something might be done with one or two of 110F, but is doubtful of rest, but Iā€™m including all pieces found. 59APy200 is the only other fossil locality in the area.
