Comment: | Age: late Karnian or early Norian (medial Late Triassic). The possibility of an early Norian age for this collection is of interest because cephalopod faunas representing this time are relatively little known. The absence of characteristic late Karnian ammonites might be taken as negative evidence for an early Norian assignment, and the two ammonites first listed were both described from a locality in Timor supposedly of this age. There are, however, good upper Karnian ammonites, like species of Tropites, known from the Triassic of the Nation River area, and there is nothing in the present collection that would preclude a late Karnian assigment. |
