Comment: | The assemblage is of late Middle or Late Silurian age, no doubt representing the same horizon as the Conchidium alaskensis beds at the north end of Heceta Island, faunas from which were described by Kirk and Amsden (1952, USGS Prof. Paper 233-C, p. 53-66). Similar Conchidium, that is C. knighti (Sowerby) characterizes the Aymestry limestone of England which is Ludlovian (Late Silurian). In Southeast Alaska the beds with Conchidium alaskensis generally yield almost no other fossils being crowded with this large brachiopod. It is therefore significant that the beds in question contain a rather diverse coral fauna including the genus Microplasma which is recorded from the Middle and Late Silurian of Europe. |
