Edit Reference Add/Edit Sample Sample List Show Map

Stratigraphic range: Mississippian and Permian(?)
Kinds of fossils: Brachiopods
Quadrangle or area: Point Hope Quad.
Shipment No.: A-62-3
Referred by: Tailleur, I. G.
Report prepared by: Dutro, J. Thomas, Jr.
Date: 05/31/1968

This report supplements that of Sando and Dutro (5/29/68) and adds information concerning the age and correlation of the Mississippian strata on the Lisburne Peninsula. As indicated by the corals, the lower part of the Cape Dyer sequence is probably correlated with the Lithostrotion aff. L. asiaticum Zone of the central Brooks Range. While some of the brachiopods have a late Osage aspect, the assemblages are all probably of Meramec age (approximate correlative of the Moorefield Shale of Arkansas). This applies to collection 20282-PC upwards through 20290-PC. All of these occur in the lower 300 feet of the sequence. Unfortunately, control on the upper part of the section is less good, but brachiopods like those of the 5th lithologic zone of the central Brooks Range occur in 20292-PC, 20293-PC and 20294-PC. Sando has suggested that the latter collection also is correlative with the 5th zone. This would suggest that the Cape Dyer sequence correlates approximately with the lower Alapah of the central Brooks Range, ranging from the Lithostrotion aff. L. asiaticum Zone in the lower 300 feet to the Goniatites crenistria Zone from 500-700 ft. Further detailed biostratigraphic work is needed to delineate the zonation and correlations.

In the Cape Thompson area, presumed Chester equivalents were identified in Ml4 and, perhaps, the scattered collections with Caninia are of this age.

One collection, 61ATr110 (20272-PC) is almost certainly Permian in age and supports the field identification as probable Siksikpuk Formation.

Brief statement of problem and remarks (from collector):
61ATr000: Collection from Crowbill Pt. at Chariot site from rocks covered by water after breakup.
Possibly additional faunal data for uppermost part of Lisburne at site (refer to Russ Campbell)
61ATr110F-122F-scattered collections along Ipewik River from upper and lower stratigraphic units of Group for sample of faunal zones represented.
61ATr139F. Collection from near base of upper strat. unit at Cape Dyer for faunal check.
61ATr140-143. Collections from detailed strat. section to establish faunal reference column for lower stratigraphic unit, Cape Dyer. 140cF contains plant fossils as well as invertebrates from tongue of terriginous rocks; should be critical in faunally dating coaly section that underlies Lisburne Group.
