Report on Referred Fossils

Following is a report on fossils from the Bradfield Canal 2 deg. quad. from rocks intruded by the Coastal Plutonic Complex and called Permian(?) in Canada. A previous report (1-22-80) by Douglass and Armstrong covered some of the material that I saw while in Menlo Park late last year. This report covers material submitted for bryozoans and fusulinids and sent to Washington for study. |

Comment: | This sample contains a few poorly preserved specimens of Pseudoschwagerina sp. and Schwagerina sp., confirming the Permian age and indicating an Early Permian (Wolfcampian) assignment. |

Following is a report on shipments A-84-33 and A-84-35 and a summary statement answering the questions raised in the letter from D. A. Brew of 11/13/84. Summary: The collections from William Henry Bay and from Saginaw Bay are similar with minor variations that should be expected within the same area and time. The collection from Mount Whipple is different. It could represent essentially the same time, but the fauna is interesting because of the Pseudoschwagerina present. Ross, C. A., 1962 discussed the distribution of species Pseudoschwagerina worldwide and noted that the P. miharanoensis complex is restricted to the Tethyan region. It has not previously been reported from any other areas. The Pseudoschwagerinas known from British Columbia, the Yukon, from Greenland and Etc. are of different complexes according to Ross. In response to your suggestion that we prepare a paper on the stratigraphic/biologic relationships in Alaska as related to the various "terranes", I would have to say that I don't think we have much that has not been covered by Ross 1983. The presence of Pseudoschwagerina sp. aff. miharanoensis in this northern area is the only new information I can offer. |

Comment: | This fauna is unlike any I have seen or seen reported from Alaska or the Yukon. It is of Early Permian age. |

Comment: | The specimens were cut for longitudinal sections of the solitary corals. The corals were fragments and incomplete. Generic identification was not possible. The matrix contained fusulinid fragments. 79DB36aA(1)(B): Two slides contain distorted fragments of fusulinids, some of which show some structure. One fragment shows part of a keriothecal wall, indicating that the specimen is at least as young as Late Pennsylvanian. Another specimen shows the shape of a Pseudofusulinella sp. suggesting an Early Permian age. None of the material warrants a firm identification or age determination. 79DB364(3): The slide contains deformed fusulinids with advanced morphology suggesting a Schwagerina sp. of Early Permian age. |
