Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1970 (12/02)
The collections submitted are of early Bajocian (Aalenian) age based on the presence of the ammonites Canavarella and Pseudolioceras cf. P. m'clintochi (Haughton). The last named species is well illustrated by Frebold (1960, Canada Geol. Survey Bull. 59, pls. 8-12 in part). The specimens of Canavarella present appear to be identical specifically with specimens described as Grammoceras? sp. indet. by Frebold (1960, Bull. 59, pl. 12, figs. 5-7) and is essentially identical with the holotype of Canavarella belophora Buckman (1904, Inferior Oolite Ammonites Supplement, p. CXXIS, pl. 22, figs. 22-24; figures reproduced in the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, Part L, Mollusca 4, p. L263). Canavarella differs from Pseudolioceras, with which it is associated in Alaska, by having a much wider umbilicus and coarser, more falciform ribs. It has been found elsewhere in northeastern Alaska by British Petroleum geologists at the west end of Ignek Valley near the head of the Katakturuk River at their localities AG 808, 812, 812A and 812B (Mesozoic locs. 29153-29156). See Report O-64-62 in the Alaskan Office files.

The specimens of Pentacrinus present, as well as others sent here recently, have been given to Porter Kier for examination. An early report should not be anticipated because he is busy as Chairman of the Department of Paleobiology and does research only from 6-9 in the mornings.
