All samples are from a section originally measured by Sainsbury, Dutro, & Churkin (1971) and reported to contain 1,050 feet rock of Ordovician (beginning no older than latest Middle Ordovician, but possibly no older than Late Ordovician) through partly Late Silurian age. The section is on hill 760, about 1 mile west of the Don River, and begins in north wall of a creek at elevation 280 ft., NW 1/4, NE 1/4 sec. 14, T. 1 N., R. 40 W. and ends in NE 1/4, SW 1/4 sec. 11. Section remeasured by J. A. Dumoulin and A. G. Harris. All sample weights are give at end of report. In summary: 1. The lower 73 m of the section is of latest Middle through Late Ordovician age and contains some conodonts known only from the Siberian Platform. 2. Beds between 73 and 124 m are of latest Ordovician to Early Silurian age. 3. Beds between 125 and 203 m are Llandoverian age, although brachiopods from as low as 165 m above the base of the section were dated as late Wenlockian or Ludlovian. Perhaps the Icriodella from 203 m ABMS ranges into the Late Silurian in the Arctic??? 4. Beds from 204 to 218 m may be of Llandoverian through early Ludlovian age and there may be an unconformity within this part of the section. 5. Beds from 219-293 m are of Ludlovian age and probably early Ludlovian. 6. There are no biostratigraphically diagnostic fossils above 293 m so that these beds can only be assigned a Ludlovian through Middle Devonian age. |
