Report on Referred Fossils

In consultation with J. T. Dutro and Ellis Yochelson. This report is concerned with two lots of material collected from gravels tentatively correlated with the Nenana gravel and exposed in the ridge between McCallum Creek and Phelan Creek, just north of Isabella Pass. The fossil assemblages that occur in both lots suggest that the cobbles were derived from Permian strata. |

Comment: | Indications of fossils are preserved as molds in the shaly rock. Dutro examined the brachiopods and pelecypods and supplied tentative identifications. The impression of a gastropod fragment was examined by Yochelson. The pieces of rock submitted contain the following: [see fossil list below]. Basing an age determination on material of this sort is hazardous. One can be fairly sure that the assemblage is Paleozoic, and the general aspect of the faunal association is more suggestive of Permian rocks than of older strata as known in this part of Alaska. |
