Comment: | The rock fragments submitted for examination contain many elongated flattened to curved fragments that in cross-sections show a fibrous prismatic structure identical with that in Inoceramus. Other genera, such Trichites, also have thick shells bearing similar prismatic structures. Such genera, however, are rather uncommon and consequently do not form masses of prismatic fragments. Inoceramus, but contrast is very common in the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Alaska and locality its prismatic shell layers occur in masses. Both Arthur Grantz and David Jones are familiar with such occurrences. Bill Oliver rules out the possibility of the fragments representing corals. The rough concentric arrangement of prisms at three spots could have been produced by wave action or perhaps deformation. Please note that the spot that shows the most distinct concentric pattern, also bears a fragment at right angles to the other fragments. |
