Comment: | The fossils mainly consist of smashed shells of Inoceramus that are unidentifiable. Several fairly well preserved fragments, however, have ornamentation consisting of concentric ribs that are crossed by radiating riblets similar to that of Inoceramus kusiroensis Nagao and Matsumoto. This species is known from Upper Cretaceous (Mestrichtian) deposits of Japan and northeastern Russia. A positive identification of the Alaskan specimens as I. kusiroensis connot be made because of their poor preservation. However, their strong similarity to that species should be noted, and it seems reasonable to postulate a possible late Cretacouse age for the Turnagain Arm slate and graywacke deposits on the basis of this similarity. |
