Comment: | This dark gray sandstone sample from field locality 18d-DB-81 consists of just two slabs, both of which contain a number of compressed plant axes. These fragments are fairly large (to 3 cm wide), but none bears leaves of fruiting structures that would provide generic identity. Only one axial specimen has surficial markings that give a hint of generic affinity. These are long, narrow longitudinally arranged ridges that suggest the partly decorticated surface of a LEPIDODENDROPSIS stem. LEPIDODENDROPSIS is characteristically a Mississippian plant, and since your collection contains nothing more definitive than this single specimen, one is forced to prefer the probability of Mississippian age for your sample. |
