KIALAGVIK FORMATION

At Wide Bay on the Alaska Peninsula the lowest exposed beds of the Kialagvik Formation contain Tmetoceras scissum (Zone 1) but no other ammonites. The overly beds have furnished an abunance of ammonite including Tmetoceras, Pseudolioceras, Planammatoceras, Eudmetoceras (Euaptetoceras), Erycites, E (Kialagvikes), and Abbasites (Zone 2). Directly above follow beds that are characterized by Docidoceras (Pseudocidoceras) widebayense (Zone 3) in association with Witchellia, Sonninia (Euhoploceras) and Sonninia (Alaskoceras). Still higher the upper 200 feet (61 m) of the Kialagvik Formation have furnished many specimens of Parabigotites crassicostatus Imlay associated with, or directly underlying Sonnina, Eudmetoceras, Bradfordia, Otoites, Stephenoceras, Stephenoceras, Stemmatoceras and Arkelloceras (Imlay, 1964, Prof. Paper 418-B, p. B18, B54). The presence of these ammonites shows that Zone 1 correlates with the European Ludwigia murchisonae Zone, Zone 2 with the Graphoceras concavum Zone, Zone 3 with most of the Sonninia sowerbyi Zone, and Zone 4 with the lower part of the Otoites sauzei Zone.

The only pelecypod of known age significance is Inoceras lucifer Eichwald which ranges throughout the Kialagvik Formation on the Alaska Peninsula. Elsewhere in southern Alaska it does extend a little higher but terminates just below the lowest occurrence of Chondroceras and Teloceras (Imlay, Prof. Paper 801, p. 11).

AMMONITE ZONES IN WIDE BAY AREA ARRANGED FROM HIGHEST TO LOWER

Zone 4. Parabigotites crassicostatus at localities 80ACe177A, 199B, TPp5. Associated with Bradfordia and Abbasites and directly underlying beds containing Sonninia, Eudmetoceras, Otoites, Stephenoceras, Stemmatoceras.

Zone 3. Docidoceras (Pseudocidoceras) widebayense at localities 80ACe138c, 174, 174A, 174B, 175A, 175B & 177C. Other characteristic zone fossils include D. (P.) paucinodosum, D. (P.) widebayense, D. (P.) cf. D. (P.) camachoi and Euhoploceras bifurcata, Witchellia and Alaskoceras.

Zone 2. Erycitoides howelli at localities 80ACe139, 161, 162, 163, 163A, 163B, 164, 175 to 176 (float), 199C, 200, 200A, 201, 202, 202 and 202A, 203, TPp 1(?), TPp 2. Other characteristic zone fossils includes Pseudolioceras whiteavesi, Abbasites, Planammatoceras, Eudmetoceras (Euaptetoceras), Erycitoides and E. (Kialagvikes).

Zone 1. Tmetoceras scissum. This genus underlies and ranges up into the zone of Erycitoides howelli.
