Comment: | The large number of broadleaved tree genera represented indicates that these samples are certainly of pre-Homerian age. Samples from the lower part of the Healy Creek Formation contain characteristic forms such as Engelhardia and Aquilapollenites, and such forms are lacking in these two samples. I think that a Seldovian age is most probable for these samples. I cannot, however, determine certainly whether the upper or lower part of the Seldovian (that is, the upper part of the Healy Creek Formation versus the Sanctuary-Suntrana equivalent) is represented. In the Nenana coal field, the Sanctuary-Suntrana interval contains Tilia (lacking in the upper part of the Healy Creek) and typically Liquidambar (rare in the upper part of the Healy Creek). On this basis, I suggest that your Jarvis Creek samples are correlative with the upper part of the Healy Creek Formation and are of early Seldovian (early Miocene) age. |
