Comment: | One of the slabs in this collection exposed some pretty good impressions of a distinctive Halobia. As you know, Halobias in general are pretty mushy things morphologically and are not understood phylogenetically, sot the probability for error in their identification and stratigraphicassignment is substantial. Nevertheless, by present standards, these specimens have to be identified as H. rugosa which is evidently a reliable index to the lower Karnian, a rather unusual stratigraphic level for fossiliferous marine rocks in most places in North America.
The spar-filled items in your collection are probably not Heterastridium (genuine Triassic goof balls), but rather may be the remains of globose, indeterminate ammonites. |

Halobia rugosa |
|
Halobia cf. H. rugosa occurs with well-dated lower Karnian ammonites in Keku Strait in the Burnt Island Conglomerate at the very base of the Hyd Group (see Muffler, 1967, p. C30-C31). I will be interested to know if correlation of this occurrence with your locality is conceivable. |
