Comment: | Age: Late Pliocene. Chlamys tugidakensis occurs elsewhere in upper Pliocene to lower Pleistocene beds of the Tugidak Formation on Tugidak Island, in lower Pleistocene beds of the Yakataga Formation on Middleton Island, and in probable Pliocene strata in the Chaix Hills. The Neptunea subspecies is known from many lower and upper Pliocene localities throughout the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province and has also been reported in upper Miocene strata of the Yakataga and Lituya Districts. Thus, as presently known, the stratigraphic ranges of these two taxa overlap only in upper Pliocene rocks. Environment: A cold (i.e. Arctic) marine hydroclimate is clearly indicated by the Natica and Neptunea species and by the large size of the Hiatella specimen. Paleobathymetry is more difficult to assess precisely, although this is clearly a shelf fauna. The bivalve genus Periploma is reported in depths of 20 to 90 meters in the modern NE Pacific, but is only doubtfully identified in the present collections. Some of the bivalves are articulated, indicating no post-mortem transport. Samples of matrix have been submitted for microfossil analysis and will be reported on separately. |

Comment: | One sample, Mf 4003 was processed for microfossils. The sandstone contained only megafossil fragments. The shale contained the following microfossils. Age: ?Pliocene. Environment: Neritic, probably middle (30-100 m). |
