Comment: | Age: Pliocene to Holocene. None of the species in this collection is known to have a narrowly defined stratigraphic occurrence. This collection neither confirms nor denies the supposed middle Pleistocene age of the outcrop. Astarte vernicosa, tentatively identified here, has not previously been reported as a fossil to my knowledge. Environment: Water depth of no more than 50 meters is indicated by the presence of the genus Mya. The worn and broken condition of most specimens in this small collection suggests post-mortem transport, so these species might have lived at a site shallow enough to be affected by storm waves, i.e., at a site much shallower than 50 meters. The species indicate an Arctic marine hydroclimate, not significantly different from that of the modern Chukchi Sea. |
