Comment:Your collection of black shale (Kayak Shale) contains a fair abundance of lycopsid stem fragments, the largest of which is 4 cm. wide. Although poorly preserved, these all show evidence of elongate leaf bolsters of the type that characterize the Mississippian genus Lepidodendropsis; the species cannot be determined, however. In the Appalachians and Midcontinent regions Lepidodendropsis is best known from the Kinderhook and Osage or equivalents, and on the basis of your limited material I would guess that your Alaskan collection would be of approximately equivalent age.
