Title: Report on Referred Fossils ,  1983 (01/09)
Report by: Jack A. Wolfe
Referred by: David A. Brew
Age: Paleocene
Formation: Kootznahoo Formation ("Kootznahoo Formation")
Comment:Although the leaves are numerous in your collection, the quality of preservation is exceedingly poor. The only recognizable entity is Dillenites ellipticus Holl., which was previously reported from the beds on Hamilton Bay. I presume the beds on Dakaneek Bay are an extension of those on Hamilton Bay; as previously reported (Wolfe and others, 1966), the beds on Hamilton Bay are definitely of Paleocene age.
The type section of the Kootznahoo Formation contains assemblages only of latest Eocene through early Miocene age. I seriously question whether the beds on Little Pybus Bay, Hamilton Bay, and Dakaneek Bay should be referred to the Kootznahoo because these beds all contain a characteristic Paleocene flora. These beds are thus about 20 million years older than any beds in the type section of the Kootznahoo Formation.
