In your memo of January 31, 1962 you stated that system age assignments for shipment No. A-60-17 would be sufficient. On that basis the material was examined and the following conclusions drawn: |

Comment: | The following four samples were much alike in yielding a very poor flora, even though the organic content was high. All of the fossils were corroded and dark indicating incipient metamorphism. The presence of the following genera: Densosporites, Florinites?, Platysaccus, Endosporites, and Lycospora in these samples suggests an Late Pennsylvanian age. However the following genera were present also: Anemia, Glaichenia, Eccommidites?, Lycopodiumsporites and Caytoniapollenites. These genera suggest an Early Cretaceous or Jurassic age. No evidence for a Late Cretaceous age was encountered. It is suggested that the Pennsylvanian spores might have been redeposited during Early Cretaceous time, then the sediments subjected to diastrophism. The flora was so poor however that I do not wish to draw any conclusions beyond the suggestions above. |

After reading Bull. 917-D, I am convinced that there are two ages present in the Eagle district. The species identified by Brown are unmistakable forms, and certainly those collections are early Tertiary. On the other hand, the specimens figured by Hollick and the new ones just examined are also clear-cut forms indicating an early late Cretaceous age. The conflict between Knowlton’s and Hollick’s lists is probably not significant. |

Comment: | There is no question that 60ABa703 and 693 are Upper Cretaceous and are indeed rough equivalents of the Melozi and Kaltag. Particularly diagnostic is the presence of Pseudoprotophyllum, since leaves of this type are known only from Aptian and Albian horizons. [hand written notes presumably by Brabb states “ prob. Albian or Cenomanian according to Wolfe, March 1962 oral communication”; “Upper” was inadvertently used for “Lower” according to Wolfe’s written communication of 5/23/1963. – note by Ning Zhang]. |
