Comment:The following identifications are from a cobble (or cobbles?) of fine-grained sandstone containing abundant external molds of Turritella collected from the east side of Wingham Island, Gulf of Alaska near lat 60o N. The locality (CAS 29223) is on the shoreline approximately 1,000 ft north of the south line of sec. 29 and close to the middle of the eastern part of the island. A handwritten notation with this material reads "possibly 29223?".

Age and correlation: Probably Eocene. Turritella buwaldana is very common in formations of middle Eocene age ("Domengine State" of Weaver and others (1944)) along the Pacific coast but has a relatively long geologic range having been recorded from the early Eocene ("Capay Stage") to the early part of the late Eocene ("Tejon Stage"). An unnamed variety occurs in the Paleocene "Meganos Stage" but it is apparently different from the present material.
